Journey To Ramingining - Sculthorpe Yidaki

22m Arts, Music, Indigenous 2015

In 2013 the Brown and Breen Piano Duo (Bonnie Brown, Louisa Breen) commissioned leading Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe to write a major work for two pianos and yidaki (sometimes colloquially called a ‘didgeridoo’) for the Duo.

The resulting work, “Island Songs”, was delivered in 2014 and required a ’D’ pitch instrument, so yidaki player Russell Smith travelled to Ramingining in Arnhem Land to commission it’s making. Master craftsman and artist Roy Burnyila worked with Russell to deliver the perfect instrument at the Bula Bula Arts Centre.

Embedded in a complex web of interconnected relationships, the yidaki is part of an extended network comprising the humans and Spirit Beings belonging to Yolngu country, its sacred topography and environment, the Yolngu kinship system and the Yolngu Matha language. The yidaki is thus connected to Yolngu Law and ceremony - song, dance, visual art and narrative.
